Johnny's fingerpicking and/thumbpick right hand technique seems key to his style. He's not playing with the volume of the old days and it makes his tone kinda watery. Saw him last year and agree that someone ought to steal his chorus or phaser, as it now seems to stay on all night, every song. The guitar is the Firebird all night and the amps are Music Man. In this late 70s concert in Germany I'm checking out, JW doesn't leave the Univibe all night. Or Hendrix in his last couple years on live stuff and some studio things. If you're unsure of what a Univibe sounds like check out most any Robin Trower stuff from the 70s- or his vid/live recording from 2005 or so. Univibes have been around at least since the late 60s. The chorus that he uses now - almost nonstop- wasn't really available in the 70s. There's a few tunes on there where he uses a Univibe. I just checked a vid of him playing Rockplast in 1979-80. To try and answer the OPs question: During his 70s superstar years, it was the rig above. Damn Bright, Damn loud, Damn Intense, Damn great. He had that cold (in a good way) hard tone with a bit of tube distortion so the amps had to be near dimed. Read later that he'd turn the bass and maybe mid tone controls all the way down, treble all the way up. I caught some early 70s shows including Johnny Winter And:įirebird into a stack of Twins.
